Columbia County and the City of St Helens are working together to bring motorized recreation closer to home. The City of St Helens owns 2400 acres of land near Yankton that encompasses Salmonberry Lake and the St Helens Tree Farm. Through a partnership with the county, plans are being developed to create both motorized and non-motorized trail systems, along with a primitive campground. In the spring and summer of 2019, the County worked with a consultant to develop the first stages of the plan. A grant proposal was submitted to the State in the fall. While no funds were awarded, Casey Garrett, General Services Director, was encouraged by the positive response the grant committee and state recreation employees have for the project. Planning and outreach continue, with state and local assistance, and a second grant application will be submitted in 2020. If successful, the first stage of trail development may open in the summer of 2021.
